Instructions for Muse Headset:

Acquire an Interaxon Muse EEG headset.
Pair your Muse with your iPhone.
- Turn Muse off
- Press and hold power button for 6 full seconds until all five lights are blinking on and off together
- Navigate to ‘Bluetooth’, in Settings on your iPhone
- Select the new device at bottom to pair

Place the Muse on your head.
- Be sure the black rubber portion is firmly pressed against the back of your ears
- The size of the headband can be adjust by sliding the thin band in/out of the plastic sides

When the Muse is properly connected to your iphone, the app will read ‘Muse’ in the lower left
When there is good contact between the electrode and your forehead, then four green bars will be displayed
- If you see red or yellow bars, adjust the position of the headset ensuring a firm fit, and that no hair is blocking connection behind ears or on forehead.
- Sometimes it can help to clean and lightly dampen the skin with a moist cloth (avoid wetting the device)

Instructions for MindWave Mobile Headset

Acquire a Neurosky MindWave Mobile EEG Headset. [Note: There is a similar white product simply called ‘MindWave’, which is not compatible with this app.]
Pair MindWave Mobile with your iPhone.
- Turn on headset
- Slide and hold power switch for 4-5 seconds (you’ll see two short blinks and then a pause)
- Navigate to ‘Bluetooth’, in Settings on your iPhone
- Select the new device at bottom to pair

Place the headset on your head.
- Be sure that the metal electrode is firmly touching your forehead and the ear clip is attached to your ear.

When the Mindwave is properly connected to your iphone, the app will read ‘MindWave’ in the lower left
When there is good contact between the electrode and your forehead, then the app will display ‘Signal: 100%’
Sit back, relax, and explore how the soundscape changes as your mind relaxes

Pointers

It can help to focus your mind on something. Try noticing your breath, paying special attention to how the air feels moving into and out of your body.
If you get lost, try mentally saying “in” as you inhale, and “out” as you exhale, to keep your focus.
Part of meditation is learning how to accept yourself just the way you are. So, if your mind begins to wander, don’t beat yourself up. That is actually perfectly natural, and part of the meditation process. Just notice that your mind was wandering, and bring it back to your breath.
Paradoxically, trying too hard to calm your mind, can actually create more stress and mental activity. So be easy on yourself, and simply notice the relationship between your experience and the music. If the music becomes more quiet, that’s awesome! And if it doesn’t, that’s awesome too!
Simply noticing what is happening without judgement is the true goal of meditation. Whether your mind is wandering or not.
